Calif. robbery spurs chase, long campus lockdown

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? What began as yet another car chase on Southern California freeways turned into a saga that spanned three counties, with one of five suspects arrested within sight of the Los Angeles police chief at a charity event and other suspects leaving students and staff stranded for up to eight hours as police searched the Cal State Fullerton campus.

The five suspects were spotted fleeing after an armed robbery Wednesday at a Moreno Valley jewelry store, police said. Two of the suspects remained at large late Wednesday, with at least one who was believed to be on campus for a time. The other three were in custody.

The search at Cal State Fullerton locked down the campus' southeast edge for roughly eight hours, as SWAT officers searched the College of Business' Mihaylo Hall and other buildings.

Students were alerted via text message at about 4 p.m. and were told to stay where they were with doors locked.

The lockdown ended just before midnight, and classes were set to resume Thursday morning as scheduled, officials said.

During the lengthy lockdown, students stayed connected to family, friends and media outlets via text messages, phone calls and Twitter from classrooms and dorm rooms, some with doors barricaded.

"We've made a makeshift bathroom out of trash cans, and whatever happens here stays here. That's the rule," Robert Pachorek, a student holed up in a classroom in Langsdorf Hall, told KABC-TV in a call from his cellphone.

Police believe at least one suspect fled into Mihaylo Hall, where some occupants were evacuated.

"We saw all these cops coming through with ? I think they were like AKs or something. They were pretty big guns," student Nate Chu told KABC. "And they eventually told us we had to leave the campus."

SWAT officers cleared the hall room by room. No students were injured.

A slow stream of students began leaving campus late Wednesday, telling several television news stations that police had cleared their buildings and allowed them to leave.

At least one person fired a handgun while attempting to rob the combination pawn shop and jewelry store in Moreno Valley just after 3 p.m., according to Riverside County sheriff's Cpl. Angel Ramos. One person was shot and survived, but police had no further details on his condition late Wednesday.

The five suspects fled the robbery in a gray Lexus and were stopped by police in Fullerton when the sedan rear-ended a vehicle near the school. Two people were detained soon after the crash. The other three ran off.

"They ran right at me. I decided to get out of their way. I did not know if they were armed or not," said student Shaun Kintaudi, who was on his way to take a test. "I decided it was best to run away from them and let the cops do their job."

The suspects were considered armed and dangerous, said Fullerton police spokesman Jeff Stuart.

Two student news anchors stuck in their campus television studio were posting video reports on the school newspaper's website as they got updates via text messages. They said they had been rehearsing for just such an event.

"About a week ago we were doing live shots, and now we are actually doing live shots with a tragic situation," journalism major Cara Seo said in a video.

All evening classes and activities were canceled Wednesday. The campus is in its final week of classes before final exams.

One of the suspects who fled after the crash near campus carjacked a silver sedan and drove onto westbound state Route 91, speeding erratically through rush hour traffic until exiting onto surface streets nearly 30 miles away in Los Angeles County. The victim of the carjacking wasn't hurt, Stuart said.

The suspect crashed the car, sprinted through a lawn and hopped a fence near a housing project in Watts. He surrendered to dozens of officers on a baseball diamond at a recreation center where Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck was giving away toys to hundreds of young children.

"He picked the wrong rec center to run into today," said LAPD Cmdr. Andy Smith.

7 Big Time Profit Tips For Paid Traffic | B.O.M.B. Business Owners ...

  • The real secret to online traffic and why optimization is so important to online marketing.
  • Why you must track every ad and how to start each test safely.
  • How to turn a campaign losing money into a winner by following your visitors around the web.

?

?

?How do I get more traffic to my site??

That?s what everyone is continually asking. But there?s NO lack of traffic sources out there.

There?s Adwords, Bing, 7Search, Facebook, Trafficvance, Leadimpact, Adready, Advertise, Sitescout, Pulse360, Adbright, Bidvertiser, Tribalfusion, Valueclick, Kontera?

And we?re just getting warmed up. I?m not going to list all of them here. There?s no lack of traffic out there. It?s just a question of building a funnel that converts visitors into sales.

Here are 7 quick tips for profiting from paid traffic.

1. Track everything

If you?re not tracking, you?re losing money. It?s as simple as that.

Every penny you spend on advertising should be tracked. I personally use a couple of tracking programs. The first one is the ad tracker built into?www.netofficetoolbox.com. This one is perfect for anywhere I just need a single link, like when running email solo ads. I also use it with offline ads like postcards. I buy a domain name just for the postcard mailing and have the domain name redirect through the ad tracker to my landing page.

You could even set-up ?goals? inside of free Google Analytics to track a majority of your online marketing campaigns.? Plus there are dozens of other trackers available online.?? It doesn?t so much which tracker you use.? Just track all your ads.

2.??? Test small

Let?s say you?re buying your first solo ad in an email newsletter. Their audience sounds right for your offer. And you know your page converts. It did on the last 5 ads you ran in other newsletters.

Should you buy the mailing to 10,000 people for $100 or the 50,000 person mailing for $300?

From experience I?d recommend the smaller $100 mailing. Yes, the top one looks like a bargain, but every new ad source is a new test. Your previous results don?t mean anything here.

Test the small ad first. If it?s profitable, expand into the larger ad.

If you?re advertising where they offer a daily budget option, USE it. Only risk what you can afford to lose.

3. ?Plan for optimization

It?s a rare occasion when an ad succeeds right out of the gate.

Instead, what commonly happens is it only returns a fraction of your expense. You spend $100 and only get $30 back on your first run.

Is it time to give up and quit? Maybe this ad source isn?t right for you. So you try another and the exact same thing happens. Over and over again.

Advertising is all about staying in the game until you win. Let?s say you?re running Adwords. You test keywords, ad text, landing pages, sales copy, and follow-up. Those are 5 places you can improve and optimize and we?re just getting warmed up.

Your initial ad is simply a starting point for the optimization process to begin. That?s why tracking everything is so vital. You have to know which keywords, ads, and landing pages are producing the good results.

4. ?Test shouts instead of whispers

Your first tests shouldn?t be headline color or which font is the best. It should be a totally different offer or headline. Change the entire layout of the landing page.

Concentrate first on what?s above the fold (the first screen of info before someone scrolls). Put more emphasis on the response button.

5. ?Focus on the offer

Your initial offer is everything. It?s more important than the headline or the photos. Can you offer a low cost trial period? How about an ?insane? guarantee?

How does your offer stand out from the competition?

Test going directly for a low cost sale versus going for an opt-in only.

With information products, I?m almost always better off going for an opt-in (quick tip ? asking for ?email only? boosts my conversion by 20% or more over asking for name and email).

6. Reverse-engineer winning competitors

If someone keeps running ads in the same places (Adwords, solo ads, magazines, banners, etc.), study their conversion process.

What is their unique promise? What do they ask you to do when you land on their page. What are they sending out to their email list?

You may even want to buy their product to see what they offer on the backend.

Analyze a few of the top competitors and you can make a list of ?requirements? for being in that market. Then compare your offer and how you can stand out as unique.

7. ?Test adding remarketing to your mix

The advertising I?ve consistently seen clients profit the most from is remarketing campaigns. A 3-to-1 or 4-to-1 profit to expense ratio isn?t uncommon.

Remarketing is where you cookie your visitors, and then can show banners to them no matter what sites they?re on.

If you visit a site about ?running shoes,? you may find yourself surrounded by banners about those running shoes even if you?re checking the weather, reading a blog, or at a forum about dogs.

This type of advertising ISN?T where you go first though. You need to already have a good foundation of traffic coming to your site to cookie and follow-up on.

The reason it?s so important going in is because I have a couple of clients who are only close to break even on other sources of traffic such as Adwords. Their profits don?t come in until they ad on remarketing campaigns to keep following up on the visitors from their other sources of traffic.

There are quite a few remarketing networks, but?www.adroll.com?is a good one to get started with.

YotaPhone Android prototype with dual LCD and E Ink displays hands-on (video)

YotaPhone Android smartphone with dual LCD and E Ink displays hands on video

Yesterday we brought you the announcement, and today we bring you the hands-on reality -- although bear in mind that this dual-screen YotaPhone is still very much a prototype. It certainly works -- pretty well, in fact -- but it's understandably rough around the edges and Yota Devices have plenty of work to do before the handset launches towards the end of next year. By way of a quick refresher: from the front this is a regular Android Jelly Bean phone with decent specs, including a 720 x 1,280 LCD display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 12-megapixel main camera. Turn it around, however, and you reveal its double identity: a 200 dpi E Ink display which can hold a range of information -- calendar appointments, ebooks, tweets and whatever else you'd like -- without draining the battery. The good new is that the YotaPhone actually makes an even better first impression than we'd hoped, while the bad news is merely what's to be expected given the early stage of development. Click past the break for our hands-on video and impressions and all will become clear.

Radioactive contamination found at ex-rocket test site

By The Associated Press

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- Lingering radioactive contamination exists at a former rocket test lab outside of Los Angeles that was the site of a partial nuclear meltdown, federal environmental regulators said Wednesday.

The Environmental Protection Agency launched a $42 million study to investigate radioactive pollution at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, 25 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Technicians collected 3,735 soil samples from a corner of the 2,850-acre hilltop lab where most of the testing was done. Of those, they found about 10 percent contained radioactive concentrations exceeding background levels.

Most of the contaminated soil was found in places like the materials handling facility that were previously cleaned, but it looked like "isolated spots were missed," said Mary Aycock, an EPA Superfund remedial project manager.

More environment coverage from NBC News

The pollution occurred in restricted areas of the lab and environmental officials said there was no immediate threat to the community because the site is secure.

The EPA presented its findings at a public meeting in Simi Valley, home of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. It expects to issue a final report by the end of the month.

The Energy Department conducted nuclear research at the site from the 1950s through 1998. It was the site of 10 reactors, one of which had a partial meltdown, and an open-air pit where workers burned radioactive and chemical waste.

The EPA deals with Superfund sites around the United States and many former Energy Department facilities in the West are more contaminated than Santa Susana, said Michael Montgomery, assistant director of EPA's Superfund division.

The Energy Department, NASA and Boeing Co. are responsible for a cleanup that is being overseen by the state. The deadline for ridding the site of chemical and radioactive pollution is 2017.

Photosynthesis: Mysterious enzyme structure solved

Dec. 12, 2012 ? Scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion (MPI CEC) have solved a long-standing puzzle in photosynthesis research. With the aid of quantum chemistry they were able to provide unexpected insight into the properties of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC). The OEC is the catalyst in plants that splits water using sunlight in order to build carbohydrates, thus powering all life on earth. Its precise structure, which was showing enigmatic spectroscopic behaviour, could now finally be solved with the aid of quantum chemistry.

In one of its most studied oxidation states the OEC revealed two types of spectroscopic signals. These signals could be converted to one another by various treatments, but not in any structurally comprehensible way. Moreover the signals are so complex that a detailed molecular structure could not be deduced.

With the aid of theoretical spectroscopic techniques, Dr. Dimitrios Pantazis, scientist at the MPI CEC, and his colleagues were able to show that the two signals are caused by two energetically similar and interconvertible structures of the complex. The core of the enzyme consists of a partial cubic structure made of manganese, calcium and oxygen (Mn4CaO5 s). "Calculations show, that the two structures differ only by one bond, that swaps between the central oxygen and the two terminal manganese atoms," states Pantazis. This small change has a huge impact on the electronic structure and thus the spectroscopic properties of the molecule. Both structures are almost equal in energy and the bond swapping can happen over a low energetic barrier. Crucially, the scientists at the MPI additionally proved using theoretical simulations that each of the two structures has a distinct spectroscopic signature and that these two signatures have a one-to-one correspondence with the experimentally observed spectroscopic signals.

The deep understanding of the OEC is fundamental in order to further elucidate nature?s mysteries on the oxidation of water, a reaction that plays an essential role for energy research, such as in artificial photosynthesis.

After these striking findings, research by Pantazis and his group is currently focused on identifying whether the oxygen atom swapping bonds with the manganese is one of the oxygen atoms released from the enzyme as molecular oxygen. The new findings will shed light on the kinetics and exchange of water molecules that take part in the reaction, paving the way for a detailed atomic-level understanding of the mechanism of water oxidation.

Creative Professionals Need Resumes for Personal Branding, Too ...

I preach often that creative professionals need to have resumes. Case in point: My latest post over at the Creative Freelancer Blog.

I was thinking about some of the mixed views I?ve heard regarding this, and it really baffles me. Why do creative professionals think they don?t need resumes, or that resumes do not apply to them? Is it because they?re indies now? Is it because they?re not on the ?hunt? for jobs? Is a resume too corporate?

A resume is much more than a tool to secure a job. Creative professionals that have them are able to appeal to corporate clients that, despite a knockout portfolio, still want to see a resume. Because creatives work for other companies in most cases, they still need to appeal to what the company wants. And companies use resumes. You may be able to show off a portfolio and get the gig, but why limit your arsenal of marketing techniques to a collection of your work? Why not put together a concise document that tells the story of your experiences and showcases your skills?

Aren?t creative professionals supposed to market themselves regularly, since they are businesses, too? In that respect, they are their brand. They have a variety of techniques at their disposal, just like any other business. But a resume is for individuals, so a resume is a great marketing tool for an individual to have. Even if it?s only cited on your website, it still makes you look professional. A large company doesn?t have that advantage, but solo professionals do! Why aren?t more of them taking advantage of it?

Still don?t think that you need a resume?

What if your dream client calls with the perfect job and asks you to submit a resume?would you say no?

I think the question that I?d like to put out there is: Why don?t creative professionals need resumes?
