Animal Photos Of The Week

It's been a fun week for animals.

Do you know anyone who has included their dog in their wedding ceremony? Check out these pictures from canine-friendly weddings. If your dog is more into goofing off, you might like this video of Drake, the sock-catching Golden Retriever.

Sometimes our animal friends can be a little mean. For example, check out this cat that decided to steal its owner's mail.

If you're looking for a cute video that also includes a baby animal, look no further than this video of Hamlet the pig and his milk bottle.

More extoic animals also made the news this week. It was announced that scientists working in New Guinea have discovered the world's smallest vertebrate. The tiny frog fits inside of a dime and is less than a third of an inch long.

Footage was also released this week of a "rare, nearly all-white leucistic Chinstrap penguin" on the South Shetland Islands near Antarctica.

Sadly, a woman from rural Indiana had 82 dogs removed from her home this week. The Associated Press reports she may face animal cruelty charges.

Check out some of the best animal pictures from around the world this week, and be sure to tell us about your favorites!

Cognac sales hit record as demand soars in China (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? Global cognac sales reached a record last year, with more than five bottles sold every second, boosted by soaring demand in China, the BNIC industry body said on its website.

The number of bottles sold rose by 6.4 percent to 162.9 million in 2011, with volumes up 20 percent in China, the BNIC said.

The Far East, which accounted for more than one-third of demand, was the biggest market and the fastest-growing with volumes up 14.4 percent, according to BNIC.

Sales in Europe inched up just 0.4 percent to 46.9 million bottles, while demand in NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) countries rose 3.2 percent to 50.8 million bottles.

The head of French spirits group Remy Cointreau told Reuters this week that he was optimistic about 2012 despite economic woes in Europe thanks to strong demand for its premium cognac in Asia and a recovering U.S. market.

The maker of Remy Martin cognac and Cointreau liqueur had "very good" Christmas sales, while October-December sales sharply exceeded its expectations thanks to strong cognac shipments ahead of the Chinese New Year, Chief Executive Jean-Marie Laborde said.

Thousands of Danes cheer popular monarch (AP)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ? Tens of thousands of flag-waving Danes braved near-freezing temperatures on Saturday to cheer Denmark's popular figurehead monarch as she celebrated 40 years on the throne.

Escorted by mounted Hussars, Queen Margrethe traveled in an 1840 horse-drawn carriage through Copenhagen to attend a reception at the City Hall, attended by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, Norway's King Harald and Queen Sonja, the family of the deposed monarch of Greece and Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson.

Under clear blue skies, crowds lined the route that started at her home, the downtown Amalienborg Castle

After a banquet lunch, Margrethe and her husband, Prince Henrik, waved from a balcony to thousands of people on the City Hall Square, bursting out in a surprise jubilee song and hurrahing.

The 71-year-old head of Europe's oldest monarchy began the day by laying a wreath at the tomb of her father, King Frederik IX.

Margrethe, whose powers are largely ceremonial, became queen on Jan. 14, 1972, after Frederik died at age 72.

The next day, a 31-year-old, fragile-looking woman, dressed in black, stared at tens of thousands of people from a parliament balcony. At her side was then-Prime Minister Jens-Otto Krag who proclaimed to the crowd: "King Frederik IX is dead. Long live Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II."

Through the past 40 years, Danes have held an affinity with the Danish royals who have remained largely scandal-free.

And besides Margrethe's royal duties, she has won praise for her artistic works, which range from abstract paintings and embroidery of church vestments to altar pieces, dinnerware and scenery and costumes for television and theater plays.

However, some believe she soon should retire and hand over her duties to her oldest son, 42-year-old Crown Prince Frederik. That's what Queen Juliana of the Netherlands did in 1980, when she turned 71, abdicating in favor of her daughter, Queen Beatrix.

But Margrethe believes staying is part of the job description in a hereditary monarchy.

"It is a commitment that I actually feel very comfortable with," she told a news conference this week.

Her family traces its lineage back to Viking kings in the 10th century.

Samsung to merge Bada with Tizen: the OS party just got a little freaky

While everyone was watching Windows Phone parting the iOS / Android curtains, no one noticed Bada and Tizen making cheeky eyes at each other. It was rumored Samsung might open-source its featurephone OS, but according to Forbes, it'll now fuse it with the Intel-backed Tizen project. Once the nuptials are complete, it's reported Bada apps will play nice with Tizen -- including full backwards compatibility -- with developers getting a new integrated SDK and API. We're guessing then, that it's the Bada brand getting the chop when the two linux-based systems tie the knot. The spirit of MeeGo, of course, also lives on in Tizen making this one big concept cocktail. One we should see being poured into "at least one or two" Samsung handsets, and eventually other products, sometime this year -- failing any last-minute cold feet.

Walt Shows Off CES Gadgets for Fox Business News (Video) - Walt ...

As noted in this Fox Business News interview, it?s not easy to get around the floor of CES when you have one of the most recognizable faces in tech, but Walt Mossberg dutifully pressed through the throngs, and while nothing really blew him away, he did find a few items intriguing:

  • Samsung Note: Dubbed a ?phablet,? the Note is a cross between a big phone and a small tablet.
  • One Tablet Per Child: The follow-up to the original One Laptop Per Child computer, this tablet is designed for third-world and developing countries.
  • Digital health and fitness products: A blood glucose meter and blood pressure cuff that interfaces with an iPhone or iPad.
  • Lenovo Yoga: This Ultrabook switches between a thin laptop and a tablet and is designed for the upcoming Windows 8.

NVIDIA announces DirectTouch technology for Tegra 3 tablets, promises a smoother touch experience

You'd think that with Tegra 3 shipping in the Transformer Prime and all, we'd know everything there is to know about the new SoC. Apparently not. NVIDIA just announced DirectTouch, a technology exclusive to its Tegra 3 platform that uses that bonus fifth core for to improve touch detection. So what does a low-power core have to do with the touch experience, you say? Essentially, what's going on is NVIDIA's PRISM Display technology separates color and backlight intensity to save battery life while preserving fidelity. In a demo, the technology looked mighty smooth, though we'll need to get hands-on ourselves and see the technology in action for more than five seconds before we can weigh in on its utility.

Sandy Henson Corso: MS and 100 Pounds Fade Away Eating Mostly Raw, Vegan Diet

I have been on a serious health journey for more than three years now. Here is my story. This is going to be a shocker because lots of people don't know this entire story. Even some of my family and closest friends don't know what I have been through with regard to my health. I will share the details in hopes of inspiring people to eat more plants and fewer animals.

In 2000 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It was a very, very dark and scary time. When I tell you I got down lots on my hands and knees and prayed for God's help I am not exaggerating! I was scared, very scared. I walked around like a zombie for years. Then I went on about my life, getting married, buying a house, having two beautiful children. After all this, about 3.5 years ago, I was still really scared. I was not feeling good, I had an IV in my arm receiving intravenous steroids, and I was more than 100 pounds overweight. Plus, every day I had to have my husband give me my medication, which was a shot, for my MS. How could this happen? I was in a dark place.

So I decided to make a change. I went to a personal trainer named Heidi who happened to move right next door where I was working. The universe works in strange ways. I sat with her in tears: How could this be? How could I have allowed myself to be so unhealthy and so overweight? She was amazing and assured me I would be fine. I worked with her for about eight months. I lost some weight and inches but most importantly I made fitness part of my life. My next step was to join a gym and see if I could keep up my fitness. I joined and I did keep up. I started running races. I did 5k races and then 5-mile races.

I then decided to go off my MS medication. My instincts have always been right for me. I believe 100 percent in the power of my own healing through diet and exercise. I do supplement with vitamin D3 and B12, which I believe are both very important. I am not saying everyone should go off their medication -- you have to do what YOUR instincts tell YOU.

I then really started looking at what I was eating. I had tried to cut back on meat and dairy because I knew it was not good for MS. I decided to become a vegetarian -- no more chicken wings and blue cheese dressing! Interestingly, when I was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago, I read about the benefits of leafy greens for MS and I had tried with a $50 juicer to juice kale, but it was not up to the task. So when I finally got a good quality juicer and started drinking green drinks, things changed. This was a pivotal moment in my journey. Ever since I started drinking green drinks I have had not one episode of MS. I kid you not! That was a little more than three years ago.

If you were following my prior post, you know 2011 was the year I fully committed to a life of health. I decided to try eating only raw and vegan food for a few days. Well, those first few days turned into almost a year. I felt amazing. I ate so many fruits and veggies, I went to a fruit festival, I met lots of inspirational raw and vegan people, hung out at a Peace Summit, did a 5-day Organic Avenue juice cleanse and started writing my book. Magic and miracles followed me around in 2011. I owe it all to the fruits and veggies!

When October hit and we had our first snowstorm I was cold and I wanted a little soup, so I had some soup and even some steamed broccoli. During the holidays I definitely had some slip-ups. They were good for me. They reminded me how awful I feel when I eat bad stuff. They also helped me realize where I tend to fall off the wagon: social events.

Going forward I will eat vegan and mostly raw. I believe in the power of raw foods but I think it might be virtually impossible for me to stay 100 percent raw forever. So I will probably eat around 95 percent raw. My diet for the most part consists of fruit for breakfast, a green drink mid-morning, a huge salad for lunch, fruit for a snack and another salad for dinner, or if I am feeling cold, I might have a big bowl of steamed broccoli for dinner.

In 2011 I lost 70 pounds, so I have now lost a little over 100 pounds altogether since my journey began 3.5 years ago! I am medication free! I run races and feel great! I am on my raw and vegan journey and I feel very healthy! Look for my before and after pictures to be posted soon!

Sculpteo 3D printer iPhone app: make a vase based on your profile, because you can

What to get the crazy billionaire in your life who has everything? Why, a vase, based on their profile, of course. That centuries-long dream has been realized with the release of the new Sculpteo iPhone app -- snap a photo of your profile or the profile of a loved one, and the app will convert it into a 3D object, which can be transformed into the sort of vase seen above. You can also get your profile on a mug, if that's your cup of tea -- or even designs based on your Twitter activity. The app is currently available on iTunes. It's a free download, but the sculptures will cost you, based on design. Another pic is located after the break.

a new opinion in Telecommunications about Sony Ericsson K660i

Sony Ericsson K660i

Product Type: Sony Ericsson mobile phones

Newest Review:?... camera quality isn't the best I have seen. The phone is very well made and is quite strong. It is very reliable and I haven't had any pro... more

I got this phone as an upgrade on 3 Mobile. It is a great little phone that I can use for everything.

Camera:

The camera is 2MP and isn't particularly good. But, it is better than other 2MP cameras I have seen.

Quality:

The sound quality is very good especially considering the fact that it isn't a Walkman phone. The screens picture quality is very good, but like I said before, the camera quality isn't the best I have seen. The phone is very well made and is quite strong. It is very reliable and I haven't had any problems with it since I got it about 4 years ago.

Exterior:

It is quite light and quite small. It is very comfortable to hold and it looks really cool. You get a variety of colours to choose from, and I have the wine and black one. But the wine colour looks more pink than red. The buttons are quite small, but they are relatively far apart. This makes it quite easy to text with but it would be even easier if it had bigger buttons.

Navigating:

This phone is very easy to use and is quite simple. The menu is easy to navigate around making it straight forward to get to your music, pictures, contacts, the Internet, applications, etc.

Features:

This phone comes with a couple of small games and apps. It has bluetooth, a timer, a stopwatch, and alarm, FM Radio, and lots more.

General:

The battery life is very good and lasts at least 3 or 4 days. If you don't use it very often, it will easily last a week. You get lots of different themes to choose from on this phone, and you can send them to other people or receive them over Bluetooth. This makes the phone look even more stylish.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this phone. I love it so much and would never get rid of it. It is simply amazing.

Summary: A Great, Cool, Simple Phone

Facebook Enters Cars; Mercedes-Benz to Introduce Facebook in Its Cars

At restaurants, at movies and at the office, checking Facebook has become a regular habit for many of the Internet social network's more than 800 million users.

Now that habit has reached a new frontier: the automobile.

Mercedes-Benz USA is bringing Facebook to its cars, with a special version of the service that is built-in to a new in-vehicle telematics system that will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

Accessing Facebook on the road is not the exactly the same as using the social network on a personal computer or a smartphone. The version of Facebook offered in Daimler AG's (DAIGn.DE) Mercedes is stripped down to a limited set of features, specially designed for drivers and centered around the locations of friends and businesses.

Like us on Facebook

But according to Facebook Vice President of Partnerships and Platform Marketing Dan Rose, the Mercedes version of Facebook reflects the social networking service's expansion to a growing list of settings where screens and Internet connections are available.

"Now that cars have screens that are intelligent, you would expect that more and more car manufacturers will want to make those screens capable of allowing people to connect with their friends and take advantage of the social context that comes along with that," Rose said in an interview.

"One of the core things that people do on their screens in the car is GPS navigation and the ability to see which of your friends are nearby is something we think will be really interesting for people."

He noted Facebook is also increasingly being integrated into televisions, with various TV manufacturers expected to showcase built-in Facebook integration at CES. DirectTV will show off a new social TV app with Facebook capabilities at CES, allowing people to share what they are watching and to add commentary.

But unlike television sets, offering Facebook in motor vehicles involves critical safety considerations, particularly at a time when lawmakers and safety advocates are increasingly focused on distracted driving.

Robert Policano, Mercedes' Product Manager for Telematics Services said the service is no more distracting than a standard in-car navigation system or radio. Any Facebook activity that requires a user to enter text is disabled while the car is in motion, he said.

The Facebook application displays a variety of standard, pre-written postings that a driver can publish on Facebook with quick taps or turns of a knob.

If a particular destination is already entered into the car's navigation system, the driver can automatically publish a Facebook posting stating they are en route to that destination, along with an estimated time of arrival, based on the current traffic patterns.

Drivers can also quickly access a list of friends that are nearby, or restaurants in the vicinity that their friends have "liked" on Facebook.

The Mercedes Facebook offering is the result of a collaboration between the two companies that started about six months ago, according to Policano. A Mercedes engineering team based in Palo Alto actually built the Facebook application, with input from Facebook on various aspects.

Facebook is one of several specially designed apps, including Google Inc (GOOG.O) and Yelp, that Mercedes drivers can flip between by turning a knob.

The apps are part of Mercedes new mbrace2 telematics system, which features a high-resolution color screen near the dashboard and a high-speed wireless Internet connection.

The mbrace2 system will be available with the launch of the 2013 SL-Class Mercedes in the Spring. The company plans to make it a standard feature on all Mercedes 2013 models that will roll out throughout the year.

One popular Facebook feature that Mercedes drivers will not get, however, is the ability to play social games such as Zynga Inc's (ZNGA.O) Farmville. Mercedes' version of Facebook does not support third-party apps.

(AP) ? A hot air balloon carrying 11 people turned into a horrifying tower of "sheer flame" Saturday after hitting power lines near a rural New Zealand town, police and witnesses said. All aboard were killed in the deadliest air crash in New Zealand in nearly 50 years.

Two of those killed jumped out of the basket in desperation before the fiery balloon plummeted to farmland with a loud bang as it hit the ground. The balloon crashed near the township of Carterton, in a region well known for its hot air ballooning, in clear, bright early morning conditions with minimal wind.

The pilot and five couples from the Wellington area, about 95 miles (150 kilometers) south of the crash site, were killed. Some of the bodies were badly burned, said Superintendent Mike Rusbatch, a police district commander in Wellington, the capital.

"It's a tragedy as bad as tragedies get," local police commander Brent Register said.

Rusbatch said it appeared the balloon's basket struck power lines that set a fire on board. Witnesses told local media of seeing 32-foot (10-meter) high flames rising from the basket of the dark blue and maroon striped balloon before it plummeted to the farmland below.

Bevan Lambeth said the basket was on fire "and the power lines were holding the basket down, but it was still about 50 meters (165 feet) in the air. Then the whole basket started to go up in flames," as the balloon broke clear of the electric lines.

"I saw ... (it) then go straight up in the air and the flames just engulfed the whole balloon and it crashed to the ground. When it came down it came down really quickly," he told TVOne News.

An aerial photo of the crash site shows two circles of black ash in a green field, close to a white house.

The burning balloon was just above the trees when David McKinlay saw it as he watered his garden.

"It looked like he (the pilot) tried to raise it a bit higher ... all of a sudden there was just 10 meters of flames," he said.

The balloon rose to 500 feet (150 meters) before dropping quickly, and turned to "just a sheer flame as it hit the ground" with a big bang, McKinlay said.

Rusbatch, the police commander, said two people jumped from the basket before it hit the ground, but did not survive.

"We believe we know who the victims were," he told the news Web site Stuff. "... A tragedy for those involved and their families."

The only victim publicly identified so far is the pilot and balloon owner, Lance Hopping. He was safety officer for the Balloons over Wairarapa annual event, and was considered an experienced and safety-conscious pilot.

New Zealand Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee expressed condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the government.

"We are deeply sorry to learn of this tragic accident and our hearts go out to those who are now mourning the loss of life," Brownlee said.

New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission opened an immediate inquiry. Investigating officer Peter Williams said investigators had looked at the crash site but had yet to begin witness interviews. The investigation could take up to a year, he said.

The crash was the deadliest air disaster in New Zealand since 1963, when a DC-3 airliner crashed in the Kaimai Range, killing all 23 passengers and crew aboard, according to the History Group of the New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

In 1979, an Air New Zealand DC-10 airliner on a scenic flight slammed into Mount Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 people on board.

BitTorrent harnesses technology for friendly filesharing service, Share

Want to send large files, without the whole world catching on? BitTorrent's going the DropBox route, with the launch of the simply -- and friendly -- named Share, a desktop app that allows you to transfer HD movies, photo collections, et al. by dragging and dropping files. The service, which is built on top of BitTorrent's much loved technology, doesn't impose any size limits and stores the content in the cloud, so you can share with offline users. Share also lets you set groups for transfers, so the rest of the world doesn't get a crack at your files. And, because you can't launch a service without some manner of social functionality these days, the aforementioned recipients can comment on the transferred files, Facebook-style. No word yet on any plans for boy band tie-ins.

iPad To Link Parents In Military With Students And Teachers

The Hartford Courant

4:57 p.m. EST, January 6, 2012

COLCHESTER ? Colchester Elementary School has purchased an Apple iPad that will enable parents in the military to participate in their child's teacher conference from just about anywhere in the world.

The device was purchased with money from a $500 grant from the Military Child Education Coalition, a nonprofit organization that promotes educational opportunities for children of military personnel.

The grant was part of a $3,000 award that the education coalition presented in June to the Southeastern Connecticut Military Superintendents Liaison Committee. The liaison committee decided to distribute the $3,000 among area school districts where children of service members are enrolled.

Barbara Gilbert, the Colchester school district's director of curriculum, said the iPad will be at the elementary school because it is the only public school in town with wireless Internet access, and the absence of a parent is felt more acutely by younger children. The iPad will enable students to talk to their parents during parent/teacher conferences via Skype or Face Time.

"The youngest children have [more] hardships and suffer a little more," Gilbert said.

Gilbert said 116 schoolchildren in town have family members in the military, including active duty, reserve and the National Guard.

weirdmike1 replied to Micah Halter's discussion 'Android vs. IOS'

Hey, My name is Micah. I am new to this whole Geeks thing and I was just interested in your opinion on whether or not you think Android will "beat" IOS. As you probably know, the iPhone is the top smartphone on the market right now, and many people speculate that Android will beat it one day. I am wandering what your views are and what you think on this race and who you think will "win".

Mitt's monotonous march (Politico)

MASON CITY, Iowa ? The events start when they?re supposed to. The candidate says what he?s supposed to. The staff does what it?s supposed to.

To watch the Mitt Romney operation in action is to see Swiss precision applied to the campaign trail and it helps explain how he finds himself contending for victory in Iowa, a state he ignored for much of the campaign.

For Romney, monotony is the mission. And the mission is regularly accomplished.

Take Thursday?s appearance at a museum honoring the creator of the Broadway hit, ?The Music Man.? At exactly 12:25 p.m., the very minute he was advertised to begin his event, the former Massachusetts governor charged through the waiting crowd to the sound of his campaign?s theme song, ?Born Free.?

While the Kid Rock number ever-present on the Romney circuit touts a character ?wild, like an untamed stallion,? the front-running presidential candidate is anything but. His events routinely start on time and are meticulously stage-managed. He remains straightjacketed to his economic message and has been distraction free.

Even Romney?s wardrobe is the same day after day. Skinny jeans, a brown belt and loafers and a white dress shirt, buttoned at the sleeves but not at the collar.

That consistency and discipline, practiced across all levels of the campaign, stands out in an unruly and chaotic nominating contest that has seen one candidate after another rise and fall, victims of their own ineptitude or inability to stand up to relentless pressures and distraction of the modern presidential campaign. No one ever asks if Romney is a serious candidate, or if his campaign is about anything other than running for president.

While his rivals have struggled with the basics of punctuality, logistics and drawing crowds, Romney?s professional advance operation has thrived, producing finely tuned events that go off without a hitch.

Romney?s aides reject the notion that they are running a boring campaign, designed to minimize turbulence, and point to capacity crowds ? that they have expertly engineered ? as evidence of growing momentum. Romney?s Iowa director, Dave Kochel, said the turnout at events has been several times the number of people who RSVP?d with the campaign.

Even those overflow crowds ? large and enthusiastic as they have been ? have managed to avoid creating speed bumps. Not once in Iowa this week did a voter ask about Romney?s Massachusetts health care law conservatives so abhor. No Iowa voter this week asked him a remotely difficult question.

And so it was that when an 8-year-old boy asked Romney here if it is ?hard to run for the president,? and Romney confirmed that it is, it served as such a stark departure from the norm that the item appeared in virtually every report filed from the event.

Throughout the campaign, Romney has produced campaign surrogates who have advanced the cause by delivering crisp, repeatable four-to-six minute introductions while hitting on the campaign?s broad themes. Rep. Aaron Schock of Illinois four times on Thursday delivered exactly the same speech stressing Romney?s electability.

Earlier this month in South Carolina, Gov. Nikki Haley three times delivered the same remarks about her frustrations in dealing with the federal government.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Romney?s most high-profile surrogate, deviated slightly off course Friday morning, warning a West Des Moines crowd that he?d ?be back, Jersey-style? if Romney is disappointed on caucus night.

Christie?s slight, cheeky departure from script paled, however, next to the gaffes committed by Rick Perry?s surrogates. Earlier this week, the Texan was introduced as the ?governor of California? by a local state senator and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio committed the unpardonable sin of referring to the University of Iowa football team as the ?Buckeyes.?

NKorea vows to defend Kim Jong Un 'unto death' (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea vowed Sunday to make an all-out drive for prosperity as it unites behind new leader Kim Jong Un, ushering in 2012 with promises to resolve food shortages, bolster its military and defend Kim Jong Il's young son "unto death."

The pledge in North Korea's annual New Year's message comes as the country enters a new era, with Kim Jong Un installed as supreme commander of the 1.2 million-strong military and as ruling party leader following his father's Dec. 17 death.

On the streets of Pyongyang, the mood was more somber than in past New Year's celebrations, as people gathered in large crowds to pay tribute to Kim Jong Il, who ruled the country for 17 years.

This New Year's message didn't include the North's routine harsh criticism of the United States and avoided the country's nuclear ambitions, a suggestion that Pyongyang may be willing to continue talks with Washington to win food aid.

This year is a crucial one for North Korea as it tries to build a "great, prosperous and powerful nation" befitting the April 2012 centenary of the birth of national founder Kim Il Sung, the new leader's grandfather.

"Glorify this year 2012 as a year of proud victory, a year when an era of prosperity is unfolding," said the New Year's message, carried by the official Korean Central News Agency. "The whole party, the entire army and all the people should possess a firm conviction that they will become human bulwarks and human shields in defending Kim Jong Un unto death."

In Pyongyang, the day was cold, snowy and gray, with splashes of bright color provided by flags, lanterns and banners reading "Happy New Year" that decorated the streets. The celebration, however, coming just days after the official mourning period for Kim Jong Il ended, was muted, unlike past years when cheerful people in their best holiday clothes thronged the streets.

From early morning, streams of people, their expressions solemn, bowed and laid bouquets and wreaths at monuments to Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung. Families trudged through the snow, carrying potted flowers and plants, to put their offerings beneath large portraits of a broadly smiling Kim Jong Il.

Workers at covered flower stands handed out yellow and red flowers to large crowds. Some slogans around the city repeated the official New Year's message, calling on citizens to glorify the coming year. Newly released posters urged people to "turn sorrow into strength and courage," a sentiment often heard from North Koreans since Kim's death.

"We lost the great Kim Jong Il because we did not do our work well. How can we have a rest?" Vice Minister of Mining Industry Pak Thae Gu told The Associated Press.

Kim Jong Un spent part of the day visiting a tank division, state media said, in what was apparently his first reported military field inspection since his father's death. Kim Jong Il regularly visited military units, factories and farms across the country, and his son's trip provides further evidence of the North's intention to link him closely with the military.

Kim Jong Un praised soldiers for closely watching enemy troops, KCNA reported. He was accompanied by his uncle and key patron Jang Song Thaek and Ri Yong Ho, chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army.

The New Year's message said North Korea would boost its military and boasted that the country is "at the epochal point of opening the gates of a thriving country," with parts of Pyongyang "turned into socialist fairylands."

Still, the message acknowledged the country's food crisis, saying "the food problem is a burning issue." North Korea had been in talks with the United States on food aid, but they stopped because of Kim Jong Il's death.

The United Nations has said a quarter of North Korea's 24 million people need outside food aid and that malnutrition is surging, especially among children.

The message, a joint editorial appearing in the Rodong Sinmun, Joson Inmingun and Chongnyon Jonwi newspapers, said North Korea must build on foundations laid last year and turn itself "into an economic giant."

"This year's message shows North Korea will focus on its economy and ideological solidarity to establish stability" for Kim Jong Un's leadership, said Yoo Ho-yeol, a professor at Korea University in South Korea.

"There is also no specific mention of the United States or the nuclear program, and that shows North Korea is leaving room for the chance of improved ties with the United States," Yoo said.

The traditional New Year's Day message is closely watched and takes on added significance this year, coming just two weeks after Kim Jong Il died.

North Korea in recent days has cemented Kim Jong Un's position as its new leader and on Saturday officially named him supreme commander of the military.

The New Year's message linked Kim Jong Un to the "songun," or military-first, policy of Kim Jong Il, and called him "the eternal center" of the country's unity.

The message spoke of a desire for reunification with South Korea ? a point North Korea often mentions ? but did not give specifics. The North warned Friday that there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death.

North Korea, which has tested two atomic devices since 2006, has said it wants to return to long-stalled talks on halting its nuclear weapons program in return for aid. Washington and Seoul, however, have insisted that the North show progress on past disarmament commitments before negotiations can resume.

The six-nation nuclear talks involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan.

The Korean peninsula remains technically in a state of conflict because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Kim Jong Un also received a boost from China, his country's biggest backer, as President Hu Jintao sent congratulations to Kim on his appointment as head of the military.
