Physical activity lowers breast cancer risk by nearly 30 percent

(NaturalNews) Most health-minded individuals understand the importance of regular physical activity to maintain optimal health and prevent a host of chronic diseases ranging from heart disease and diabetes to stroke and dementia. In the past, studies have suggested that regular exercise may reduce the risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer, but many questions have remained unanswered regarding activity duration, exercise type and intensity.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill publishing in the journal CANCER have found that physical activity, either mild or intense and before or after menopause, may reduce breast cancer risk. As an aside, the scientists discovered that substantial weight gain may negate these benefits. The lead study investigator, Dr. Lauren McCullough and her team looked for a link between recreational physical activity, done at different time points in life, and the risk of developing breast cancer.

The study examined 1,504 women with breast cancer (233 noninvasive and 1,271 invasive) and 1,555 women without breast cancer who were 20 to 98-years-old. Participants were part of the Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project, an investigation set up to review possible environmental causes of breast cancer. Researchers determined that women who exercised either during their reproductive or postmenopausal years had a reduced risk of developing breast cancer.

The study found that women who exercise between ten and nineteen hours per week experienced a 30 percent decrease in breast cancer risk. Risk levels were reduced regardless of duration or intensity, meaning that a rigorous workout was not necessary to achieve positive results. Exercise seemed to lower the risk of hormone receptor positive breast cancer (ER or PR positive), which is the most commonly diagnosed tumor type among American women.

The study team highlighted the finding that increased body weight increased overall risk of developing breast cancer, regardless of hours spent exercising. Clearly, physical activity is important to lower risk, but gaining weight can negate the effect and is an independent risk factor. Dr. McCullough concluded ?The observation of a reduced risk of breast cancer for women who engaged in exercise after menopause is particularly encouraging given the late age of onset for breast cancer.? A daily 30 minute walk and maintaining a healthy body weight provide a significant shield against this insidious disease.

Jessie J Sued For Copyright Infringement Over 'Domino'

Loomis & the Lust think her track sounds a lot like their 'Bright Red Chords.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Jessie J

Jessie J is being sued by California's Loomis & the Lust, who claim that her track "Domino" sounds a lot like their song "Bright Red Chords."

The band's lead singer, Will Loomis, alleges that Jessie J's biggest Stateside hit has a few striking similarities to portions of the band's own 2008 track. He is suing not only Jessie, but also Universal Music Group, Lava Records and Universal Republic Records. "Mr. Loomis never consented to the use of his song," lawyer Chris Arledge wrote in a statement to Billboard. "And we look forward to obtaining an appropriate remedy from the court for this clear infringement."

In April, Loomis uploaded a video of the band's song with Jessie's vocals laid on it, but the clip has since been removed on "copyright grounds." However, a music video for "Bright Red Chords" remains online, allowing fans to determine if Loomis has a case against the British songstress.

Reps for Jessie J and producer Dr. Luke had not responded to MTV News' request for comment by press time.

"Domino" is featured on Jessie's debut studio album, Who You Are, which dropped last year. It features songwriting and production credits from A-listers like Dr. Luke, Claude Kelly, Max Martin and Cirkut. "Domino" reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 24 weeks on the chart.

"People have heard 'Domino' and said, 'It's nothing like you.' But I'm like, 'Well, the album's really eclectic anyway, and I never go into the studio and say, 'I wanna do another song that's like "Price Tag" or another song like "Do It Like a Dude," ' " Jessie told MTV's Buzzworthy blog last year. "I listened to a lot of Whitney [Houston] and Prince ... and we kinda just wanted to write a song that's timeless, that's fun and uplifting."

Do you think "Domino" and "Bright Red Chords" sound alike? Let us know in the comments!

New? No thanks! 14 things you should always buy used

Would you like to be $5,000 to $50,000 richer by this time next year? It might be as simple as thinking "pre-owned" rather than new. Here's a list of things you should never buy new -- see if you can add to it.

By Brandon Ballenger,?Contributor / June 27, 2012

There?s no good reason to buy a new book. Pick up a copy online or at a local store for pennies on the dollar. Students at University of California, San Diego are protesting the price of text books that now average over $100 per book. The high price of college textbooks makes buying used especially attractive.

Robert Harbison/The Christian Science Monitor

We recently shared a list of 20 things you should never buy used. Because it?s often true: You get what you pay for. When it comes to safety, hygiene, and warranties, there?s no substitute for buying some things new.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But for the most part, you can save a lot of money without sacrificing quality by purchasing many things used. In fact, it can change your life.

1. Cars

The biggest way to?save on car ownership?is to?avoid paying the sticker price. A properly maintained year-old vehicle looks and functions like a new car ? but costs 20 percent less. If you can save just $4,000 by buying used, then earn 10 percent on it for 20 years, you?ll be $26,000 ahead. And if you can avoid interest by paying cash rather than financing your ride, you?ll be richer still.

You can find a reliable used car for $5,000. The older the car the greater the risk, but having a car inspected by a mechanic can reduce it. The important thing when it comes to cars: Ignore the commercials. Cars are transportation, not status symbols.

2. Houses

With new homes, you don?t have to worry about repairs. But even factoring in fix-up costs ? which you?ll know prior to purchase because you?ve had a professional inspection done ? a pre-owned house will normally save thousands over new.

According to the latest data from the National Association of Home Builders, the average price for a new home in April ($282,600) was about 25 percent higher than the average price for an existing home ($226,400). Save $50,000 by buying used and you?ll have a lower mortgage payment, freeing up cash to do other more important things ? like saving for retirement.

Pre-owned also means more flexible negotiations and mature landscaping.

3. Books

There?s no good reason to buy a new book. Pick up a copy online or at a local store for pennies on the dollar. Or rediscover the library, which these days may even offer free e-book downloads.

The high price of college textbooks makes buying used especially attractive. But you can save even more by checking the library (before your classmates), finding a textbook exchange, or buying an older edition for less. Do some searching and you?ll find lots of ways to get textbooks cheaper, or even free.

Depending on demand and when a new edition is released, you may also be able to recoup much of your cost by reselling them in the right places. Money Talks News writer Ricky Michalski recently bought one of his chemistry texts online for $75 ? and resold it for $72 four months later. That means he?s $72 richer than the student who paid full price, then threw that book in a box, never to be read again.

4. Timeshares

A new timeshare is a terrible buy. Reuters recently reported owners are so desperate to ditch the annual maintenance fees that many timeshares are selling for $1. If you can buy a timeshare for basically nothing, avoiding a developer?s high-pressure sales pitch will make you tens of thousands of dollars richer. Check out articles like How to Buy and Sell Timeshares.

5. Recreational toys

From boats to RVs to bikes, buying used makes sense: They?re terrifically expensive new, they depreciate rapidly, and if someone is selling, they may not have had the free time to use it very much.

6. Sports and exercise gear

Everybody wants to lose weight, but few make the time to do it. That means many people have exercise gear they want to unload cheap or even free on sites like eBay and Freecycle. There are also stores that specialize in used gear, like Play It Again Sports.

Weights can?t go bad, although you?ll want to test things like treadmills and other more complex equipment. As we mentioned in our Best Bought New post, bicycle helmets are one thing you should buy new for safety reasons.?But otherwise, why not buy used?

7.?Furniture

Used furniture from garage sales and consignment stores is often a great bargain ? just ask Money Talks News writer Angela Colley, who refurnished her home for under $720. Look around your house and mentally add up the amount you?ve spent on new furniture. Had you bought used, you could easily have saved 50 percent, which means that money would be in your pocket instead of a furniture retailer?s.

Moving sales are great places to save on furniture, since moving furniture is expensive, and sellers have a deadline to dump it. Snap up bargains when college dorms and apartments start emptying in the Spring.

Added bonus of buying used: you might find stuff that?s better built than today?s.

8. Jewelry

Jewelry depreciates faster than cars. And unlike cars, used jewelry isn?t going to break down, and nobody can tell a ring made this year from one made in 1950. In fact, vintage styles can be highly sought after. Best sources include pawn shops, online at places like eBay, and government and other auctions. Obviously, if you?re buying something expensive, be knowledgeable or enlist the help of someone who is.

9. Baby gear

Baby stuff doesn?t get much use ? they outgrow everything in months. So baby clothes, toys, and nursery furniture can be smart used buys.

But there are definitely used baby items to avoid. Car seats and cribs have safety risks, and everything should be checked for product recalls. If you?re not sure, say no. But if you are, you can easily save 50 percent or more.

10. Clothes

Clean out your closet and get a tax deduction by donating the clothes you don?t want to a thrift store. Better yet, take them to a resale shop and make some money. And while you?re there, shop around.

The problem with buying clothes this way ? as with many things you buy used ? is that it might be hard to find exactly what you?re looking for. But if you?re not in a hurry, buying used can cut your clothing budget by 90 percent. For nicer clothes, head to the thrift and resale stores closest to upscale neighborhoods.

11. Dishware

Dishes don?t go bad with time, and buying used can save 80 percent or more. Got a friend getting married? Odds are good they?re going to be getting rid of old stuff to make room for wedding gifts. Thrift shops, yard sales and online sites like Freecycle are also good bets.

12. Electronics

Used electronics are a mixed bag: Things a few years old might be obsolete or incompatible with the latest technology, and it?s often hard to tell whether there are hardware issues.

However, buying used a few months after a product?s release (or even getting last year?s model) can be a great way to save. Purchasing from someone you know personally is a good way to avoid lemons, and factory-refurbished items have been professionally examined and repaired, and may even come with a warranty.

Electronics are a great place to save because so many people foolishly feel the need to buy the latest edition of everything. Not being one of those people will make you richer.

13. Video games and movies

These media are a lot like books. Many buy them new, enjoy them once, then toss them on a shelf. If that?s you, recycle your entertainment money and trade them in.

Online-only stores such as Amazon and Newegg sometimes feature sales with new copies cheaper than the used ones at brick-and-mortar stores, so be sure and check. But used prices are typically 10 to 70 percent less than new, with the best deals on the older stuff.

As with electronics, patience pays.

14. Tools

Most people don?t use tools regularly, so it may make sense to borrow or rent them. But well-maintained tools last a long time, and are easy to find at yard sales. It can be hard to tell how much life power tools have left ? so only buy them used from people you trust.

Bottom line? You can be thousands of dollars richer simply by letting other people take the depreciation hit that accompanies virtually all consumer purchases. While it?s convenient to go into a local store and walk out with something new, there?s a high price to pay for that convenience. If you can save $10,000 every year by buying used, then compound that money at 10 percent, in 30 years you?ll be $1,809,434 richer than someone who buys the same things new. And what have you sacrificed? Nothing. After all, those new items become used the minute you bring them home.

Nokia Lumia 800 and 710 updated to Windows Phone 75, finally get to Tango

We'd heard that the Lumia 800 and 710 were to get Windows Phone 7.5 sometime soon, but the time has officially arrived for these two to Tango. Today Nokia announced that the fresh code has already started rolling out, bringing hotspot and flip-to-silence functionality to the handsets. Plus, once you've updated via your Zune desktop software, access to the nifty Camera Extras software -- already promised to Lumia 900 owners -- is but a download away. As a refresher, those Extras allow Lumias to take Scalado-powered Smart Group Shots, provide a better burst mode for action pics, plus add a self-timer and panorama mode as well. Want to see the new camera features in action before taking the plunge? Check out the video after the break.

Update: As our astute commenters have pointed out, the Lumias both have Mango onboard, so this bit of software is but an update to Windows Phone 7.5 that brings additional features.

Machine Gun Kelly Reps For The Underdogs In 'Invincible' Video

'The main focus was to continue to encourage the underdog, which is what I've always been good at,' MGK tells MTV News.

Machine Gun Kelly relishes the underdog role. In 2010 he fought to catch hip-hop's attention with his Lace Up mixtape, and last year he signed with Diddy's Bad Boy Records. But still he raps as if the world is against him, and maybe it is, so in his new video for "Invincible" MGK continues to rep for the misfits.

"The main focus was to basically just continue to encourage the underdog, which is what I've always been good at," Kells told MTV News during the "Invincible" video shoot.

The video, which dropped last week on Vevo, tells a number of different stories. MGK himself stars in one storyline that sees him rushing to the hospital to be by the side of his daughter, who is sick. The scene is loosely based on his life. "It's basically a play off of real-life situations that I've been involved in," he said.

The entire video tells the stories of people from all walks of life who fight adversity. There is a couple in distress because they are unable to get pregnant; another storyline involves a young man who unfairly gets beaten down by a number of attackers. The odds are clearly not in his favor, but still he fights on.

The fact is that in the past year, MGK has racked up a considerable number of wins; still, he remains the same. Rather than let his rising star go to his head, the Cleveland spitter stays as connected to his roots as humanly possible, and his fans love him for it.

What do you think of MGK's "Invincible" video? Let us know!

'Shame' punishments like ponytail cutting increase

(AP) ? Sleep in a doghouse rather than jail, walk through town with a humiliating sign or cut off a child's ponytail as eye-for-eye punishment.

Such unconventional sentences that shame defendants are steadily increasing and turning state courts into circus shows, a legal scholar said Monday.

"This is part of a disturbing trend that has developed in the last 20 years," said Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University. "These are punishments that often appeal to the public and bring a type of instant gratification for the court."

Turley said the most recent example occurred in Utah when a 13-year-old girl went to court for cutting a 3-year-old girl's hair into a bob with dollar-store scissors.

The teen and her 11-year-old friend were referred to court for the March incident involving the toddler and for harassing another girl in Colorado by telephone.

The judge agreed to cut back community service time if the mother of the teen chopped off her daughter's ponytail in court.

The mother has since filed a formal complaint, saying the judge at the May hearing intimidated her into the eye-for-an-eye penalty.

"I fail to see how the court reducing itself to the level of a 13-year-old teaches a moral let alone legal lesson," Turley said. "The court was doing precisely what the 13-year-old did to a child."

Turley, who has written extensively on how shaming undermines justice, said the sentence conveys the wrong message.

"The use of arbitrary and capricious authority is not what this girl needs to learn. The court is showing her he can do to her what she did to other people," Turley said.

KSL-TV initially reported the story after the teen's mother, Valerie Bruno, of Price, Utah, obtained audio of the juvenile court hearing and shared it with the reporter.

Bruno said she has filed a formal complaint against 7th District Juvenile Judge Scott Johansen with the Utah Judicial Conduct Commission.

The commission said it is barred from commenting on whether a complaint has been filed. It only becomes public if disciplinary action is taken against a judge.

Under state law, judges are given discretion in coming up with sanctions for youth that will change their behavior in a positive way.

Bruno told the Deseret News that she felt intimidated into following through with the judge's suggestion. The 11-year-old also was ordered to get her hair cut short but was allowed to go to a salon.

Bruno was put on the spot in court and ordered to cut her daughter's hair all the way "to the rubber band" after the victim's mother said Bruno had not sliced far enough.

Mindy Moss, mother of the toddler, told The Salt Lake Tribune she originally called police about the malicious haircut because she feared the girls' behavior could become more serious.

The older girls had apparently befriended the toddler while playing at a McDonald's, then used a pair of scissors purchased from a nearby dollar store to cut off several inches of her hair. KSL said surveillance video at the McDonald's helped identify the 13-year-old. She was ordered to serve 30 days in detention and to perform 276 hours of community service ? which Johansen said he would reduce by 150 hours if the ponytail was cut in his courtroom.

"Not to make excuses for the girl but ... feeling intimidated by the court is a very common response," Turley said of the mother's complaint. "Many feel they are not in position to refuse these types of demands."

He said shame sentences also occur in adult courts and have judges "acting like little Caesars."

In a 2009 column for USA Today, Turley cited an abusive father in Texas given a choice of spending 30 days in jail or 30 nights sleeping in a doghouse. He chose the doghouse to be able to keep his job. In an Ohio case, a municipal judge sentenced two teens found guilty of breaking into a church on Christmas Eve to march through town with a donkey and a sign reading, "Sorry for the Jackass Offense." The same judge later ordered a woman to be taken to a remote location to sleep outside for abandoning kittens in parks.

Turley said Texas Judge Ted Poe made people shovel manure to degrade them. Poe parlayed his "poetic justice" into a congressional seat, while Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has faced complaints over orders that male inmates wear pink underwear.

"To some extent, we've seen the merging of law and entertainment in the last 10 years," Turley said, noting that citizens are being given a steady diet with television programs such as Judge Judy and Judge Brown.

He said he has seen no evidence that shame sentences have any more impact than conventional ones and thought society had "turned back the door" on such primitive sentences in the 18th century.

Turley said very few judges end up being disciplined.

"It's the obligation of every state bar to protect the integrity of the legal system," Turley said.

Utah state bar officials referred comment to the judicial conduct commission.

World experts meet in Edinburgh to consider how life experiences impact on our genes

World experts meet in Edinburgh to consider how life experiences impact on our genes [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 25-Jun-2012

World experts from the fields of social, biological and medical science will today (Monday 25 June 2012) gather in Edinburgh to discuss how they can cooperate to improve our understanding of the way behaviours and life experiences can influence how our genetic inheritance is expressed (epigenetics). This collaboration will also help contribute to understanding the implications epigenetic changes have for such key social policy issues as parenting, poverty, obesity and health.

The symposium is organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in collaboration with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum, and hosted at Edinburgh's City Chambers. Entitled Social science and epigenetics: opportunities and challenges, the symposium will seek to examine how multidisciplinary research into epigenetics the science of the lasting marks that modify the expression of the genes encoded in our DNA might help provide answers to societal concerns including why deprivation has such a marked impact on child development and on health outcomes.

Epigenetics (literally 'above the gene') is a recent scientific development that examines how particular mechanisms can influence whether certain genes are turned off, turned on, or modify a gene's level of activity. Our genome includes both our DNA and chromatin that binds everything together. Research into epigenetics has revealed that even though a person's DNA is not altered, lasting 'marks' on the DNA or the chromatin structure alter the extent to which each gene is expressed to produce the proteins that are the essential building blocks of life. Emerging research shows that factors such as poverty, parenting, stress and diet can impact how someone's genes are expressed, and this can remain "hard wired", with certain of these lasting epigenetic marks even being passed from parents to children.

Speaking as the epigenetic symposium commenced Professor John Hobcraft of the University of York, the lead scientific organiser of the Symposium, said: "Research is beginning to indicate how environmental and social factors are linked to a series of epigenetic changes, sometimes across quite broad areas of the genome. Factors such as the way in which parents bring up their offspring (parenting, diet, cognitive inputs) or experience of social disadvantages seem to have implications for how genes manifest themselves in later life."

"By bringing together experts from biological, medical and social sciences, this symposium will help determine how we can best work co-operatively to address 'grand challenge' research questions on the links between the social sciences and epigenetics and the pathways and mechanisms involved. Further progress in understanding the consequences of these epigenetic changes, and their potential reversibility for later in life, has the potential to bring benefits to individuals and society as a whole."

Commenting on the significance of the symposium to Scotland Professor Steve Yearley, Director of the Edinburgh-based ESRC Genomics Policy and Research Forum, said: "Scotland has long been at the forefront of life-sciences and social science research. It is therefore fitting that such a high-profile event, bringing together a diverse group of international experts to determine the opportunities and challenges research into epigenetics presents for the world, should be hosted in Scotland."

"Equally, recent scientific studies have indicated that some of the problems Scotland continues to experience in relation to poor health despite efforts by policy-makers to address these may actually be linked to epigenetic changes resulting from social deprivation. This may partly underlie the so-called 'Glasgow effect'".

Notes for editors

1. The ESRC International Scientific Symposium: Social science and epigenetic: opportunities and challenges will take place at Edinburgh City Chambers, 25-26 June 2012. It will bring together expert social, biological and medical scientists to take forward thinking and explore the opportunities for promoting co-operation and collaboration between scientists and social scientists in the field of epigenetics

2. The symposium is being organised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) with support from the Genomics Forum, and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

3. As set out in a Scottish Government study reported in 2010, the link between socio-economic circumstances and health is well know, and there is an increasing evidence base supporting the hypothesis of a 'Scottish Effect', and more specifically a 'Glasgow Effect', the terminology used to identify higher levels of mortality and poor health found in Scotland and Glasgow beyond that explained by socio-economic circumstances. Subsequent research undertaken at the University of Glasgow has indicated that such health inequalities may be due, at least in part, to epigenetic effects resulting from socio-economic circumstances - http://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-01-health-inequalities-imprinted-dna.html

4. The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues. It supports independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector. The ESRC's total budget for 2012/13 is 205 million. At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and independent research institutes.

5. The ESRC Genomics Forum has a commitment to promote social research on the contemporary life sciences around issues including designer babies, synthetic blood, DNA profiling, identity politics, personalised medicine, stem cell research and synthetic biology. Creative engagements form a valuable part of this work helping to reach new audiences. Based at the University of Edinburgh, the Forum runs a programme of national and international activities to draw natural and social scientists, policy makers, regulators, civil society and business into an ongoing dialogue about the relationship between genomics and society. The Forum is part of the ESRC Genomics Network.

6. The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) invests in world-class bioscience research and training on behalf of the UK public. Our aim is to further scientific knowledge to promote economic growth, wealth and job creation and to improve quality of life in the UK and beyond.

Funded by Government, and with an annual budget of around 445M (2011-2012), we support research and training in universities and strategically funded institutes. BBSRC research and the people we fund are helping society to meet major challenges, including food security, green energy and healthier, longer lives. Our investments underpin important UK economic sectors, such as farming, food, industrial biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Military operation in Pakistan may displace 600,000 people

Beijing News.Net
Thursday 7th June, 2012 (IANS)

Islamabad, June 8 (IANS) Military operation against the militants in a Pakistani tribal region will displace nearly 600, 000 people, an international aid agency has said.

According to Save the Children, an estimated 600,000 people (of which over 300,000 are expected to be children) in total will be displaced from Pakistan's Khyber agency if security operations continued, Xinhua news agency reported.

The recent influx of internally displaced people (IDPs) from the region began in January and intensified in mid-March as operations in the area increased. Since then, approximately 63,000 families have been displaced and moved to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The recently displaced families join an estimated total of 144,104 displaced families from previous conflicts in the area, which have been continuing since 2009.

According to United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), approximately 1,200 individuals are currently being registered at the Jalozai camp daily compared to up to 10,000 during mid-March.

According to Save the Children, over 90 percent of new IDPs are staying off-camp, living in rented spaces or with host families. It is imperative to assist the off-camp IDPs, as very limited relief services reach them.

As most IDPs are women and children belonging to a conservative culture, they are unwilling to live in camps and many are unable to access relief services. IDPs living with host communities say that they don't expect to return home in next 12 months.
