Jonathan Ive becomes Knight Commander in UK

Queen Elizabeth II finished 2011 by knighting Apple's Senior VP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive. Sir Jonathan is now a Knight Commander of the British Empire for fostering the UK worldwide and his direct contributions to design. He had already been named a Commander of the British Empire in 2005.

Sir Jonathan, in reacting to the knighthood, told the BBC he was "humbled and sincerely grateful" for the honor. He claimed to have stood on the shoulders of giants, having benefited from a "wonderful tradition" of design in his home country.

Ive knew from age 14 that he wanted to design for a living and attended Northumbria Polytechnic to learn industrial design work. He started as a commercial designer almost immediately and garnered reputation with Tangerine, a design agency he co-founded with friends.

Apple came into play after it hired him on in 1992, having been impressed with notebook design work Tangerine had done in consultancy. Coming on at what many consider Apple's low point, however, his design talents were widely thought to have gone underused until Steve Jobs returned to Apple. Jobs quickly recognized Ive's abilities and put him in charge of design at Apple in 1997, a decision that ultimately proved crucial to the turnaround of a company that nearly went bankrupt.

Many started taking notice with the original iMac's translucent gumdrop shape in 1998. He quickly reinvented the company's entire look, dropping beige boxes for much more distinctive looks. All of Apple's core products, including the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, embody at least his basic concepts.

A large part of Sir Jonathan's influence comes from former Braun designer Dieter Rams, who emphasized a minimalist but quality appearance. Jobs is known to have sparked some ideas, although he occasionally took credit for Ive's own work.

Surveys shows China manufacturing slowing further (AP)

BEIJING ? China's manufacturing slowed in December for a second month due to weak global demand amid U.S. and European economic woes, a survey released Friday showed.

The latest HSBC Purchasing Managers Index added to growing signs of strain on China's manufacturers and exporters. They have been battered by a plunge in global demand and lending curbs that have driven thousands of entrepreneurs into bankruptcy, wiping out jobs and raising the specter of unrest.

The index for December stood at 48.7 on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction in activity. It said companies reported a drop in foreign orders due to sluggish global demand.

"Weakening external demand is starting to bite," said HSBC economist Hongbin Qu in a statement with the survey.

The latest data will add to pressure on Beijing to ease spending and lending controls to stabilize growth and spur job creation, Qu said.

"Hard landings should be avoided so long as easing measures filter through in the coming months," he said.

China's export growth declined in November for a third month, falling to 13.8 percent from the 15.9 percent the previous month.

The slump in global demand has battered export-driven southern coastal regions, where thousands of small companies have been driven out of business and the survivors have laid off tens of thousands of workers.

Smaller private companies were hard hit by bank lending curbs imposed to cool inflation and a boom in housing prices. The government has promised to have state banks lend more to help struggling entrepreneurs but says most of its curbs will remain in place.

Perry: Abortion allowed if woman's life at risk

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry said Wednesday that he has "always struggled" with his position on abortion and clarified remarks he made a day earlier to indicate he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk.

The Texas governor, campaigning hard in the final week ahead of Iowa's lead-off Jan. 3 caucuses, had told a pastor Tuesday that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights after meeting a woman, Rebecca Kissling, who said she was conceived during a rape. She was featured in former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's anti-abortion documentary, "The Gift of Life," and Perry attended its Iowa premier.

A day later, Perry said he opposes abortion rights in cases of rape and incest, but would allow the legal procedure if the pregnancy threatened the mother's life.

"I think I've always struggled with that issue," Perry told reporters after meeting with voters in a sports bar. "After I went to see the movie a 'Gift of Life' and had a conversation with Rebecca Kissling, and I really thought about this through the Christmas holidays and that's the conclusion I came to."

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus: "That's correct."

In his push before Iowa holds its first caucuses, Perry is playing up his social conservative credentials. But his late shift on abortion drew questions about what exactly he believed on the issue many Iowans make their top priority.

A Time-CNN poll released Wednesday showed only 19 percent of those likely to caucus view cultural issues such as abortion and gay rights were unimportant to their selection of a candidate. A separate New York Times-CBS News poll earlier this month said 32 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers said they would not support and candidate who changed positions on abortion.

In Osceola on Tuesday, Perry told a voter he had changed his view.

"You're seeing a transformation," Perry said. "That transformation was after watching the DVD 'Gift of Life,' and I really started giving some, some thought about the issue of rape and incest, and some powerful stories in that DVD."

He cited Kissling during that meeting at an electric co-op.

"When the lady who was in it was looking me in the eye and saying, 'You need to think this through,' she said, 'I am the product of a rape' and she said 'my life has worth,'" Perry said. "It was a powerful moment for me."
